A particularly cold spell during the winter of 1995, saw all the frogs and fish in John Myall’s pond dying – trapped under the ice, unable to breathe. Knowing that attempts to break the ice could cause shockwaves that were likely to add to his pond life’s distress, his only recourse was to use hot water to slowly melt the ice. He managed to save all the fish, except one, and almost all the frogs.

As the cold snap continued, he scoured garden centres and shops, searching for a device to prevent such a thing happening again and was amazed to find that nothing existed. So, the idea for Ice Guard was born.
